Movie Review :
If you watch “We Die Young”—the new coming-of-age/gangster drama hybrid—it’ll in all probability be as a result of Jean-Claude Van Damme is that the film’s headlining star. Sadly, Van Damme, the rare ’80s action star who has (in recent years) given some thought to however he will age graciously on-screen, isn’t in “We Die Young” plenty. Granted, a much bigger role may not have improved Van Damme’s agreeably twitchy performance because of the mute, Oxycontin-addicted ex-marine, Daniel.
However Daniel is that the most compelling a part of “We Die Young,” a well-recognized story regarding reluctant adolescent gang member Lucas (Elijah Rodriguez) and his apparently not possible quest to interrupt removed from Mara Salvatrucha (aka: MS-13), a gang of Central yank criminals who, in reality, are related to drug-running and kid whoredom.
Lucas’ story is additionally generally plausible due to a robust performance by David Castañeda, who plays the brutal MS-13 gang leader Rincon. However, Castañeda and Van Damme’s scene-stealing performances do not considerably improve writer/director Lior Geller’s frequent reliance on racial stereotypes and mobster film cliches.
You can tell that Geller does not very care regarding his characters on the far side some extent simply by observance his movie’s sensationalistic gap scene: Lucas (14 years old) provides viewers an unsettling tour of his corner of Washington D.C., one that concludes with Rincon quoting Shakespeare’s Shylock—a terribly selective reading of his famed “If you prick us, will we not bleed” speech—right before he encourages his minions to beat a random person to a bloody pulp.

Lucas nonchalantly mentions (through voiceover narration) that his neighborhood is simply a 20-minute bike go forth from the White House, an otherwise unrelated factoid that offers “We Die Young” a superficial reasonably political connectedness.
After this introductory scene, “We Die Young” may be a largely by-the-numbers crime comedy within the vein of “A Bronx Tale” or “American Maine”. Lucas juggles many responsibilities, all of that inevitably return to a head at the marriage of Gabriela (Robyn Cara), Rincon’s disabled sister. First: Lucas delivers pain-killers to Daniel, WHO broods wordlessly in his motorcar body search whenever he isn’t dalliance with under-developed love interest Anna (Joana Metrass) or flashing back to his traumatizing tour of Islamic State of Afghanistan.
Then: Lucas tries to prevent his susceptible 10-year-old brother from joining MS-13. Finally: Lucas goes on a special/dangerous mission for Rincon, who desires to create a handle an (apparently) a lot of dangerous El Salvadorean drug cartel—even although Rincon’s chapter of MS-13 is below FBI surveillance.
This leaves Van Damme within the uncommon position of taking part in a tragic supporting role. That is not essentially a nasty factor since Van Damme has usually tried, with mixed results, to prove that he is quite simply a commendable limber set of gams (Most mugging: “Enemies Closer”; Best body language: “The Bouncer”). As Daniel, Van Damme at the start stumbles around like he is doing a weird riff on Boris Karloff’s version of Frankenstein’s monster, complete with exaggerated grimaces and scowls.

However in an exceedingly few scenes, Van Damme merely reacts to his fellow forged members, like once Daniel, overseen by Lucas, patches up Miguel when an alarming confrontation with some characteristically bloody-minded gang members. During this moment, Van Damme does not do much: very, he is simply listening and displeased. However that is quite enough to be suggestive, a consummate quality that Van Damme has usually tried to cultivate, however, has seldom been ready to sustain.
Unfortunately, Geller does not encourage Van Damme or any of his fellow forged members to be suggestive for long. Geller over-emphasizes the stereotypically violent nature of butch MS-13 members like Rincon’s hothead lieutenant fool (Charlie MacGechan) mistreatment fuzzy and/or shaky hand-held camerawork. MacGechan’s face is consequently recorded with jerky camera movements that draw attention to the gun in his hand or his body’s restless motion.
Even close-ups of Castañeda’s face (which is roofed in tattoos) appear to emphasize his character’s most flashy qualities. that may be a real shame since Castañeda shows nice promise. Several of his tic-y mannerisms arouse mind tough kings like Al Pacino and Edward James Olmos, particularly the manner Castañeda tents his fingers, pauses dramatically, or leers while not blinking. however, Castañeda is nice enough that I believed Rincon—and not the actor—had subconsciously internalized a few of decades-worth of his favorite mobster poses.
I generally questioned what “We Die Young” might need being like if Geller centered on his latent juxtaposition of Rincon and Daniel. Each character wishes to at the same time shield and escapes their communities. However, neither Rincon nor Daniel is aware of the way to do right by their white-haired ones, particularly Lucas. Rodriguez delivers a fine enough performance. However, Geller ne’er looks positive on what to try to together with his main character.
Therefore for the foremost half, “We Die Young” follows a poorly outlined audience surrogate. One who will what he is told while not ever very standing aside from his guardians. Van Damme could also be famed enough that he will afford to continue noodling around with totally different roles and performance designs. However, his fellow forged members be plenty higher than “We Die Young.”
